A City Born of an Empress and an Emperor

Addis Ababa, meaning “New Flower” in Amharic, is a relatively young city by Ethiopian standards, having been officially founded in 1887 by Emperor Menelik II and his consort, Empress Taytu Betul. Taytu initially selected the site atop Mount Entoto but eventually moved the capital to the current, warmer location which had hot springs and plentiful water.

Unlike many African capitals that grew from colonial outposts, Addis Ababa was established and has continuously served as the sovereign capital of an independent African nation. This unique history of self-determination is a source of immense national pride and is deeply woven into the city’s identity.

The Political and Diplomatic Nexus

Addis Ababa is more than just Ethiopia’s political heart; it is widely regarded as the Diplomatic Capital of Africa.

  • African Union (AU) Headquarters: The city is home to the headquarters of the African Union (AU), the continent-wide organization comprising 55 member states. The presence of the AU, along with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), has solidified Addis Ababa’s role as the central hub for continental politics, peace, and security.
  • A “Global South” Capital: This diplomatic significance draws ambassadors, diplomats, and international organizations from around the world, creating a cosmopolitan atmosphere that contrasts with its deep-rooted local traditions.
Culture, Architecture, and The Addis Vibe

The city’s architecture is a fascinating testament to its history of rapid growth:

  • A Blend of Eras: Visitors will see traditional tukul (round, thatched) houses standing next to Italian-influenced buildings from the 1930s (when Italy occupied the country for five years), side-by-side with modern glass-and-steel skyscrapers and vast new infrastructure projects like the Addis Ababa Light Rail.
  • Orthodox Christianity: Ethiopia is one of the world’s oldest Christian nations, and the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church plays a massive role in city life. Large, historic churches, like the Holy Trinity Cathedral, are central landmarks, and the rhythm of life is often marked by religious holidays and fasting periods.
  • Coffee Culture: Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee (specifically the Arabica bean), and the famous Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony is an essential ritual. Addis Ababa is steeped in this culture, from street-side vendors brewing the potent liquid to modern, stylish cafes.
