    From Rift Valley Lakes to Gurage Highlands

    Departing Addis Ababa, our journey south begins with a stop at the shimmering Lake Ziway, where we'll take a short boat excursion to spot a dazzling array of waterbirds and hippos. Continuing our drive, we ascend from the Rift Valley floor into the breathtaking Gurage highlands, a region of stunning beauty characterized by its emerald-green, terraced mountains. We will arrive at the peaceful village of Wogeram in the afternoon, where you will be warmly welcomed by your local host family. This evening is for immersion; settle into your homestay and explore the serene surroundings on a gentle walk, engaging with the community and learning about their way of life before a shared home-cooked meal.

    Mountain Hikes & Journey to the Rift Valley Lakes

    After a traditional breakfast, we lace up our boots for a morning hike through the Gurage highlands. The trails offer magnificent views of the cascading terraces and valleys, leading us through villages where daily life has continued for generations. We return to our homestay to pack before driving to Butajira for lunch. The afternoon is a scenic drive via Hawassa to Yirgalem, where we will check into the beautiful Aregash Lodge. As the sun begins to set, we will take a guided walk through the lodge’s own lush forest, learning about the coffee, avocado, and guava trees that thrive in this fertile area.

    Cultural Encounters & The Road to Arba Minch

    Today, we continue our exploration, driving via Sodo to Arba Minch. This route is a visual feast, passing through vibrant farmlands where you can admire the day-to-day activities of local people tending to their crops of bananas, mangoes, cereals, and the versatile Enset (false banana). Before checking into our hotel, we will visit a Dorze village. Here, you will be welcomed into their unique beehive-shaped huts and have the opportunity to participate in preparing food from the Enset tree, a cornerstone of their diet. We then proceed to the Hiale Resort in Arba Minch, perched on a cliff with stunning views over the twin lakes of Abaya and Chamo.

The name "Arba Minch" means "Forty Springs," and the resort lives up to this promise of natural abundance.     Lake Chamo's Giants & Return to Addis

    Our final day begins with an unforgettable boat trip on Lake Chamo. This lake is renowned for its vast congregations of giant Nile crocodiles and large pods of hippos, offering one of the most thrilling wildlife spectacles in Ethiopia. After this morning adventure, we will enjoy a final lunch in Arba Minch before beginning the scenic drive back to Addis Ababa. We will arrive in the evening, filled with memories of hidden villages, majestic landscapes, and genuine cultural connections.
